IUI Treatment in Loni Kalbhor
IUI (intrauterine insemination) treatment in Loni Kalbhor a simpler, less invasive fertility option, guided by Dr. Tejal Borate Baravkar at Bloom Hospital.
What Is IUI Treatment?
IUI stands for Intrauterine Insemination.
During IUI, a semen sample is processed in the laboratory to concentrate the healthier, motile sperm. The prepared sperm is then introduced into the uterus using a thin catheter around the time of ovulation.
Unlike IVF, fertilization does not take place in a laboratory during IUI. If fertilization occurs, it happens naturally inside the reproductive tract.
Not every fertility challenge needs the most advanced treatment on the list. For a lot of couples, IUI is the right starting point — simpler, less invasive, and often effective enough that IVF never has to enter the conversation. Dr. Tejal Borate Baravkar’s job in that first consultation is figuring out honestly whether IUI is your best shot, rather than pushing you toward whatever’s most advanced by default.
Quick Answer
IUI may be considered when sperm need help reaching the egg or when treatment is being used to improve the timing and conditions for fertilization. IUI is not suitable for every couple. The decision depends on factors such as age, ovarian reserve, ovulation, sperm quality and the condition of the fallopian tubes.
Who Needs IUI Treatment?
IUI may be considered for selected patients with:
- Unexplained Infertility
In selected couples with unexplained infertility, IUI combined with ovarian stimulation may be considered before moving to IVF. Doctor describes a typical course of approximately three or four cycles of ovarian stimulation with oral medication.
- Male Infertility
IUI may be useful when sperm count or movement is mildly reduced but there are enough motile sperm for insemination.
The semen sample is processed before IUI to concentrate motile sperm.
- Ovulation Problems
Women who do not ovulate regularly may sometimes undergo ovulation induction followed by IUI.
Treatment is monitored carefully to assess follicular development and reduce risks associated with excessive ovarian response.
- Use of Donor Sperm
IUI may be used with donor sperm in appropriate circumstances, depending on the patient’s clinical situation and applicable legal and regulatory requirements.
What Tests Are Done Before IUI?
Before starting IUI, the fertility specialist generally evaluates both partners. Depending on the individual case, investigations may include:
| Evaluation | Assessment |
|---|---|
| Medical and fertility history | Previous pregnancies, treatments and duration of infertility |
| Menstrual history | Ovulation and cycle pattern |
| Ultrasound | Uterus, ovaries, follicles and pelvic structures |
| Ovarian reserve assessment | Provides information about expected ovarian response |
| Hormonal testing | Selected reproductive hormone assessment |
| Semen analysis | Sperm count, movement and morphology |
| Tubal assessment | Considered depending on the fertility history |
| Uterine assessment | Looks for structural abnormalities that may affect treatment |
How does IUI Treatment Work?
- Step 1
Fertility Assessment
First, we reviews your medical history, menstrual cycles, previous pregnancies, fertility treatments and relevant test results. The aim is to determine whether IUI is appropriate and whether ovulation induction or another treatment should be used.
- Step 2
Monitoring Ovulation
IUI needs to be timed around ovulation. Your fertility team may monitor follicle development using ultrasound. Depending on the treatment protocol, medication may be used to stimulate ovulation or trigger ovulation at an appropriate time.
- Step 3
Sperm Collection
A semen sample is collected according to the instructions provided by the fertility team. The sample may come from the male partner or, where appropriate, from a donor.
- Step 4
Sperm Preparation
The semen sample is processed to separate and concentrate the more motile sperm. The prepared sperm is then placed into a small catheter for insemination.
- Step 5
IUI Procedure
The doctor gently places the catheter through the cervix into the uterus. The prepared sperm is then introduced into the uterine cavity. The procedure itself is generally brief.
- Step 6
After IUI
You may be advised to continue prescribed medication and follow specific instructions from your fertility team. Pregnancy cannot be confirmed immediately after IUI. A pregnancy test is performed after an appropriate interval recommended by your doctor.
How Long Does an IUI Procedure Take?
The insemination itself is usually completed within a short period. However, the total visit may take longer because the sperm sample needs to be collected and processed before insemination.
The exact timing depends on the laboratory process and the treatment protocol being followed.
What Happens After IUI?
After the procedure, you can generally follow your doctor’s instructions regarding normal activities.
Some women may experience:
- Mild abdominal cramps
- Light spotting
- Temporary pelvic discomfort
These symptoms do not by themselves indicate whether IUI has succeeded or failed.
Your fertility team will tell you when to perform a pregnancy test.
When Should You Take a Pregnancy Test After IUI?
A pregnancy test is usually performed after enough time has passed for pregnancy hormone levels to become detectable. Testing too early can lead to an inaccurate result.
If an ovulation-trigger medication containing hCG was used, testing too soon can sometimes produce a false-positive result because the medication itself contains hCG.
Follow the testing date provided by your fertility specialist rather than testing immediately after IUI.
What Is the Success Rate of IUI?
There is no guaranteed IUI success rate that applies to every patient. Results vary substantially according to the patient’s age, diagnosis, sperm parameters, ovarian response and treatment protocol.
This is why a fertility clinic should not promise a fixed pregnancy percentage before evaluating the patient.
Your doctor can discuss the factors that may influence your individual chances after reviewing your fertility investigations.
When Should You See a Fertility Specialist?
Doctor defines infertility as failure to achieve pregnancy after 12 months or more of regular unprotected sexual intercourse.
However, evaluation may be appropriate earlier in certain situations.
Consider seeking medical advice sooner if there is:
- Irregular or absent ovulation
- Known PCOS or significant ovulation problems
- Suspected endometriosis
- Previous pelvic surgery
- Known or suspected blocked fallopian tubes
- Previous ovarian surgery
- Previous chemotherapy or treatments that may affect fertility
- Known male-factor fertility problems
- Recurrent pregnancy loss
- Advanced reproductive age
A fertility evaluation helps determine whether IVF is actually needed or whether another treatment may be more appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is IUI treatment?
IUI, or intrauterine insemination, is a fertility treatment in which specially prepared sperm is placed directly inside the uterus around the time of ovulation.
How does IUI work?
Sperm is collected and processed to concentrate motile sperm. The prepared sperm is then placed into the uterus around ovulation, giving sperm a shorter path toward the fallopian tubes where fertilization can occur.
Is IUI the same as IVF?
No. During IUI, fertilization occurs inside the body. During IVF, eggs are collected and fertilized in a laboratory before an embryo is transferred into the uterus.
How long does an IUI procedure take?
The insemination itself is usually completed quickly, but the total appointment can take longer because the semen sample must be processed before the procedure.
Can IUI work for PCOS?
Yes. IUI may be used in selected women with PCOS, particularly when ovulation induction is required and other fertility factors are suitable.
Can IUI work for blocked fallopian tubes?
IUI generally requires at least one functioning fallopian tube. If both fallopian tubes are blocked, IVF may be considered instead.
Does IUI guarantee pregnancy?
No. IUI does not guarantee pregnancy. The outcome depends on factors such as age, ovulation, sperm quality, tubal function and the underlying cause of infertility.
